I have seen several real ghosts particularly around the nursing homes I've worked in. One time I was with an elderly man who was complaining that his (dead) son was in his room. I saw the edge of someone's back, as though made of glass but refracting the light that came through it.
In this painting I decided to experiment and made the lines on the wallpaper and sofa fabric bend where the light went through the ghost.
The ghost boy looks like he feels ill. He is ill of course! Poppy is the name of my dog who is lying next to him. I made the angle of the floor deliberately tilted to add a sense of unease.
